Media coverage of VP hunting accident....

www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/02/13/cheney/index.html

Okay, folks. How's the media doing on this one? There's all sorts of political flashpoints and holes for the talking heads to step in here. There's hunting, guns....

I was watching CNN this morning and it seemed like they were doing pretty well. They had on one of the hunting experts I watch shooting things on OLN, they had a statistic that per 100,000 participants, hunting is way safer than waterskiing and a gazillion times safer than football.... And nobody tried to make a humorous crack on the situation (I'll probably get that tonight from my favorite news comic).

They did put up a graphic of an over-under. We know it was a 28-gauge. I'm not sure if we know it was an double, pump, semi-auto... so I'm not sure I like any "That's a photo of a shotgun? Good enough, they all look alike" mentality, but I'm not sure that's what was going on, anyway.

I will say I know of a fine news organization that was doing a piece on a Rev. War battle and ran a graphic of an "American Longrifle," but instead of an old flinter they ran a shot of a 20th Century British Lee-Enfield bolt action....

Son...the rifle you mention was not an Enfield, it was a Russian Moisin-Nagant and appeared to be either a 91/30 or a 44. The photo appeared to have some distortion so it was hard to tell.

I think that Good Morning America spent a ridiculous amount of time on the report this morning. There are very few bird hunters who haven't been stung by a pellet from time to time, as I can testify. Tempest in a teapot.

Well I'd recalled the bulbed magazine of the Enfield but you were right -- the fattened stock... shows it to be a Mosin-Nagant. But you're right, the photo was somewhat distorted so it was hard to tell.

Good catch, by the way. I wondered how many folks had noticed that news outlet (of which I somehow have great knowledge) screwed up.

I agree that folks are spending a lot of time on the hunting incident. But for what it's worth, I watched Fox News a while today (gasp! Yep, folks, I'm open to other opinions. Aren't ya proud?) and they were fattening up on it pretty good as well. I am glad that Mr. Whittington seems OK, as not many folks spend several days in the hospital for fun.

I like your website. Cute cat, and that longbow is tempting....

All of the media is guilty of overkill on this one. I saw the press conference today and one reporter asked if the "accidental shooting could be considered a felony under Texas law." I think he answered his own question when he referred to it as accidental. Geez!

Thanks for the link. I have one of those so am pretty familiar. The cat may look cute but she is a holy terror!

If they want to cover this, fine. Just stop acting like their is some sort of scandal here. This is an accident. My goodness. Even when Teddy Kennedy "escaped" from the flooded car and didn't tell anyone for an extended amount of time that he left a woman to die in it, the media make excuses and took up for him. At least this poor guy got immediate medical attention. What about Mary Jo?
